Lumbermen’s was founded by three brothers, Paul, John and Henry Bouma. Called Lumbermen’s Pick-up initially, the business was founded to serve West Michigan lumber dealers (Lumbermen) with construction materials in a post-war era when these items were in short supply. When Lumbermen’s expanded into delivery services, “Pick-up” was dropped from the name. In the 1970s, Lumbermen’s enhanced product offerings to serve the kitchen and bath industry while also expanding geographically into Ohio and Indiana. After 35 years of growing Lumbermen’s, in 1990, the Bouma brothers began exploring options for Lumbermen’s future. Maintaining their focus on family values and a business built on strong relationships, they transitioned the ownership model and Lumbermen’s became 100% employee owned. Beginning in the late 1990s, Lumbermen’s began diversifying the business model to include value-add manufacturing of a variety of products including countertops, doors, and wood components. Today, Lumbermen’s employs over 550 people throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. While the size of the company has growth tremendously, the values rooted in faith, family, and relationships remain the same.
